A striking survivor from the golden age of British enamel signage. Before modern illuminated shopfronts and printed plastic displays, Britain’s streets were characterised by beautifully manufactured enamel signs, designed to communicate their message clearly and endure years of exposure to the elements. This handsome Post Office sign is a wonderful example of that tradition. Produced by the Chromographic Enamel Company of Wolverhampton, identified by its surviving “CHROMO” maker’s mark, the sign advertises the financial and postal services once available through Britain’s Post Office network. Its confident black typography contrasts beautifully with the white enamel background, while the simple rectangular form and dark border create an unmistakably traditional appearance. The sign retains the signs of its working life, including age-related surface wear, minor enamel losses and marks around its mounting points.
