An original mid-20th-century British Railway enamel sign reading “WAY OUT AND LADIES ROOM” in crisp white lettering against a deep green background, from the Southern Region. This double-sided sign retains its original hanging loops, making it ideal for overhead display in a vintage-inspired space. Its clean, modernist typeface and functional message speak to the design clarity of the railway era, and it offers both visual appeal and strong collector value. Used at a station, the sign has a wonderful presence and is suitable for collectors of railwayana, decorators, or anyone looking to add an authentic piece of transport history to their home or business. Good vintage condition with a glossy enamel finish. Displays small enamel losses around the edges, some minor rust to the fixings, and light surface wear, all consistent with age and outdoor use. Probably one of the rarest signs I have ever come across. It measure 227mm x 40mm and manufactured from solid copper and glass. A class item (and class items are never cheap). Beautiful sign made from solid copper with enamel lettering. The letters are cut into the solid copper and then the gaps filled with glass frits (powdered glass) then fired in a kiln. Well certainly in sign manufacture. Due to the fact that you can get a plastic sign printed out for pennies – and they look so. Of course, nowadays cheap plastic signs are everywhere – even on (and in) old historic buildings and heritage sites. Personally, being an ardent collector of vintage signage I hate to see cheap plastic signs in such places and cannot suppress a shudder when I do. I suppose this is why quality made old vintage signs are so rare these days – they’ve become collectors items and consequently command high prices.
