Offered for sale is a very rare enamel sign dating back to the pre war years. This is one of a number of direction signs that would have been displayed near to the relevant LNER stations later to become the Central Line of London Transport. Also of interest are the names of various public houses and tea rooms – whatever became of Sharpes Tea Rooms? This was one of two like signs that came to light during the 1980’s when they were discovered to be propping up a garden fence in Wickford, Essex. Both were cleaned up and given some light renovation. Measuring 39.5″ x 25″ the majority of the sign showing the map of suburban Essex is in good condition considering its former life and has been kept indoors in a dry environment over the last 30 plus years. Whilst the edges are frayed the sign could easily be mounted on a flat board and would be a nice addition to an enthusiast’s study particularly if you come from the area depicted. I’ve priced this as to what I think it’s worth but it won’t break my heart not to sell. I used to actively collect railway signs and I’m amazed at what prices are being asked for those other than totems or targets.
