Becoming a master jeweler himself, William opened his own company “Hobé Cie” in American to produce extravagant costumes and jewelry. Williams first commission in the US came in the mid-1920s from Florence Ziegfeld where he produced costumes and costume jewelry for Broadway productions. William’s success with Ziegfeld opened the doors to many other Hollywood theater companies and film studios. In the panorama of American costume jewelry manufacturers, Hobé is known as a producer of luxury items – jewelry with an antique flavor, rich with extremely brilliant crystals connected by filigreed motifs, and wrought with the skill and proficiency of a master craftsman. During the forties, Hobé jewels were promoted by the most beloved stars with the catchy slogan Jewels of Legendary Splendor. Marcel Boucher designed jewelry for Mazer Bros. In the early 1930s. He established his own company, Marcel Boucher and Cie Company, in 1937. The company became a subsidiary of Dovorn Industries, a watch manufacterer, in 1972. Marcel Boucher died in 1965. Sandra Boucher, his wife, ran the company until 1972. Boucher jewelry is usually signed and carries an inventory number. Early marks are “Marboux” or “MB” in a cartouche. Later marks are “Marcel Boucher” and “Boucher”. Marcel Boucher jewelry is “high-end” and can be tough to tell from the “real thing”. Numbers on Boucher pieces are inventory/style numbers. Though the numbers are a clue to age, the style may have been designed, numbered, and yet not actually produced until much later. Additionally, some styles had more than one production run. For your consideration is this very pretty vintage signed Ciner enamel, jeweled and rhinestone sword pin that is in very good condition. It is not missing any rhinestones or jewels and the black enameling on the blade is perfect. The pin features emerald green, ruby red and sapphire blue glass cabochons that are foil less in open back settings. Small clear pave set rhinestones accent the grip, handle, pommel and blade and there are none that are missing but many of these stones are yellowed and/or dull. Even with that, the pin still shines and reflects the light very well. The pin has a polished gold rhodium plating that is in excellent condition, still very shiny and bright with no deterioration, darkening or verdigris. It is approximately 3 1/8″ tall x 3/4″ wide and it has is stamped’CINER on the back. The pin has its original locking’c’ clasp that is firmly attached and works properly. It’s a beautiful piece by this well renowned designer in good, clean condition and would be an outstanding piece to add to your vintage jewelry collection.
