Vintage Japanese “Uji Tea” Enamel Sign. = Uji (An area of Kyoto famed for its tea). Please check out my other listings for more Japanese vintage, retro and antique bits. Uji-cha is a common name for all Japanese green tea produced from Uji, Kyoto. The 3 main types of Uji tea are Matcha, Sencha and Gyokuro. Japanese tea is originated from the Tang Dynasty of China, which is during the Heian period of Japan when Chinese influences were at its peak. When tea seeds were introduced to Japan, they were first planted at Toganoo. These seeds were later spread in Uji, which became the site to produce the highest quality of tea leaf in Japan. Uji has witnessed the diversification of green tea. Beginning from the high-grade matcha, which was only accessible by the nobles, Sencha was invented in the 18th century to fulfil the need of common people. The combination of these two tea production techniques produced gyokuro. The increasing popularity of Uji tea is deeply connected with the successful of tea ceremonies, including Tocha, Chanoyu and Senchado. Uji is regarded as a benchmark for high-quality tea leaves. This is due to a combination of different factors, including soil quality, misty climate, optimal soil quality, sloping hills and the fact that Obuku never frosts even during winter. Tea produced from Uji are often presented to the Imperial Family and used in tea ceremonies. Hence, many local farmers are still applying the traditional method of processing tea leaf instead of relying on machines. This knowledge is passed down from generation to generation to produce high-quality tea.

Patina all over leaving a nice vintage look. = Mosquito Coil (Katori Senko). = Earth Swirl (A-su Uzumaki) Product name. Born in Kyoto on November 12, 1950 is a Japanese actress and singer. Her real name is Yumiko Nishitsuji. In the 1965 she was appointed the commercial face of Earth Pharmaceutical (Otsuka Group) mosquito coil product “Earth Swirl”. These enamels signs were distributed around whole sellers and outlets. She joined the Nishino Ballet Company in 1962 and appeared in 1965 “Sunday Shincho” and 1966 “11PM”, and she gained her popularity due to her outstanding proportions and her lovely appearance and fishnet stockings. In 1967, she performed on the music program “Les Girls” (NTV) with Katsuko Kanai and Etsuko Nami, and sang and danced Marilyn Monroe’s repertoire. As a singer she started her career with Crown Records in 1967, while later on transferring to Philips Records, Minorphone, Columbia Records. Some of her hits include “Lemon and Melon” “Flame Woman” “Shinanogawa” “Before parting”, “Chigire cloud”, etc. As an actress, she performed in the 1973 movie “Love’s Sweet Errors-Kyoko and Jiro-“. In the same year she also appeared in the movie “Shinanogawa”. In 1974 in “The Great Prophecies of Nostradamus, ” “Esupai, ” and in 1976, The Murder of a Skyscraper. ” In the same year, she also appeared in the role of Madonna in Toei’s blockbuster movie “Torakku Yaro Series”, “Torakku Yaro Tenka Gomen. Her hit “Night’s One Person” was used as an insert song for the film. She released her new album “Jewel Box” on March 27, 2019 for the first time in 37 years, and held her first in-store live in her career. Kabushiki gaisha Yanase is a retailer of new European and North American vehicles and used cars in Japan. As of the year 2002, Yanase has the rights of exclusive retailer of Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Volvo, Saab, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Smart vehicles to Japanese consumers. It is part of the Itochu group. There is a related company or subsidiary organization dealing with a particular brand of imported cars, some in rural areas. On May 25, 2015, the Yanase car dealership network celebrated its 100 anniversary. In 1964 (Showa 39), as an agent of Master Consolidated, an industrial portable heater, Master Heater became the sole agent in Japan for Tar and Lady Heaters. The catchphrase of the master heater is “I will give you heat immediately, whether outdoors or indoors”, and it was able to radiate an astonishing amount of heat as soon as the switch was turned on. It was used for various purposes such as melting snow and ice on steel frames at construction sites, curing concrete, shortening the drying time in painting work, heating vinyl greenhouses and livestock barns, and cleaning. Vintage Japanese Enamel Sign “Kiriyama dye” This is an interesting one a dye production company for home dying fabrics and kimono’s. Quite an old one as the writing is right to left instead of the now standardised left to right. Can’t find a great deal of information about this company. = Mameyakkoshirushi (“Bean man Logo” – I’m guessing this was the mascot for the logo like the michelin man) = Kiriyama dye 1.14kg 45cm x 33cm This from someones blogspot on Japanese dyes: The Tate-dyeing teqnique uses alkaline dyes. When caustic soda and hydrosulfite are applied to the dyes to reduce them and make them soluble in water. After soaking the fibers in the solution you expose them to the the air where they oxidized into a robust color that does not come off easily even when washed. The prosperity of household dyes was probably until the 1950s, and in the 1960s, the number of people who re-dyed kimonos and made them into futons was reduced after Dylon came in. Some dyes in Dylon are boiled and dyed, but some dyes are dyed in water. It was a great complaint that anyone could easily dye something. Dylon had many colors, especially pale colors called pastel colors. Until then, dyeing that was very troublesome became easy to do in the kitchen of the apartment room, and all the fashion magazines featured dyeing using Dylon. Dyeing was even called “Dylon”. In the era of shifting from easy orders and orders to ready-made clothes, T-shirts came out, and dyed items that could be dyed in your favorite color became a bit of a boom, and Dylon was lined up at every handicraft shop. There were still many fabric shops in the middle of big towns such as in front of Shibuya station, but the cloths were exchanged in winter and summer, and cotton could not be found in winter. Since only glossy cloth and limited colors were available, some people dyed sheeting with Dylon and used it for handicrafts. Until Dylon came out, the image of household dyes was that they were quietly placed in the corners of the shelves with dust, but I was surprised at the display shelves of Kiriyama dyes. Even though they put so much effort into advertising and made a large number of colours, it is strange that I can’t even find out when Kiriyama Dye was founded and where the factory was.
